Durability Over the Long Haul

Northeast Underground Guidelines (NEUG) call for box pads with a minimum safety factor of 2x for the normal life span of a transformer—30 years. Recent testing of 30-year old Highline box pads, returned from the field, revealed they still carried loads up to 7,000 pounds while complying with deflection criteria of NEUG. The New Millennium Line is an extension of this history of quality, while pricing is in line with the current needs of our customers.

COMPRESSION MOLDED PRODUCTS

HIGHLINE SPRAY-UP PRODUCT SERIES

Compression Molding of SMC (sheet molding compound)

This molding technique involves compressing material containing a temperature-activated catalyst in a heated match metal die using a vertical press. The matched metal dies define the outer surface of the part being made.

The molding process begins with the delivery of high viscosity uncured composite material to the mold. Mold temperatures typically are in the range of 275- 350 Deg F. As the mold closes, composite viscosity is reduced under the heat and pressure approximating 1000 psi. The resin and the isotropically distributed reinforcements flow to fill the mold cavity.

While the mold remains closed, the thermoset material undergoes a chemical change (cure) that permanently hardens it into the shape of the mold cavity. Mold closure times vary from 30 seconds up to several minutes depending on part design and material formulation. When the mold is closed the pressure exerted by the press tonnage forces the resin, gel coat and UV inhibitor throughout the reinforcement. The resulting part is extremely strong, durable and consistent.

Spray-Up

Spray lay-up is an open mold process that uses mechanical spraying and chopping equipment for depositing the resin and glass reinforcement. Chopping equipment consists of a spray gun attachment, which chops glass fiber into predetermined lengths and projects it to merge with the resin mix stream. This causes the resin and chopped glass to be deposited simultaneously to the desired layer thickness on the mold surface (or on the gel coat that was applied to the mold.

The mold (female mold) is first coated with a wax to ensure removal after curing. A layer of gel coat is then sprayed on to the mold to form the outermost surface of the products. The polyester resin is applied with a spray gun that has a glass chopper attachment.

Layers are built up and rolled out on the mold as necessary to form the part. The spray gun has separate resin and catalyst streams that mix as they exit the gun.

Conclusion

Each manufacturing technique has unique capabilities and limitations. Overall a compression-molded part is the most desirable because you are guaranteed a consistently strong and durable product each and every time. Unfortunately, for low-volume production, compression molding is not effective. Currently the spray-up process is the best alternative for low-volume parts.

October 26, 2004—WALTHAM, MA—Highline Products announced the completion of its development of the New Millennium single-phase box pad line. The development of an improved version of the company's compression molded products commenced three years ago. The goal was a significant reduction in the weight of the products, while still offering customers products that were 100% compliant with industry guidelines for strength, integrity and deflection over an extended life time. The result of this work is a patented design for box pads of 15", 24" and 32" heights that are 40% lighter than most products on the market. The new product line was developed in conjunction with Metis Design; a Cambridge, MA based consulting firm specializing in composite structures and our manufacturing partner, Molded Fiberglass Company.

Paul Tannenbaum, President of Highline Products, views the New Millennium product line as an extension of the high-quality products that Highline has provided to its utility customers since 1971. He said, "The box pads will be manufactured using a new family of match metal tools at Molded Fiberglass's, ISO 9000 certified plant in Ashtabula, OH. The nature of the New Millennium design allows Highline to offer an expanded number of top openings on the box pads. Thus, almost every utility will now have the opportunity to purchase compression molded parts with their consistent quality in strength, laminate structure, and external appearance at competitive prices."

In other developments, Highline completed the construction of a full family of molds for the production FRP/polymer splice boxes in sizes up 30" x 48" as well as a family of all polymer flat pads. Mr. Tannenbaum stated, "This development is consistent with Highline's overall strategy of product line expansion in order to more fully satisfy customers' needs."

for extra cable training room. Pull Boxes can stand alone and be used by themselves with conduit for pulling cables.These are just a few examples of Pull Boxes with different cut outs, hole sizes, and configurations.
Highline can manufacture custom Pull Box layouts with customers request. Are used in the underground distribution of power and signals. They provide access to the buried lines and allow an area for splicing and pulling of cable or housing of in-line equipment.
